Ethan Dickens - during his speech in ted talks he talked about the Technology in school here are the lines of his speech from technology in school. I would like to ask you could you go a day without technology no I didn't think so because we use technology every day in places like the military we use the technology in school and we use it in cars, we use it outside, we use it inside, we use it everywhere. But could we or even should we use the technology in the classroom ? The places where we learn and we grow every single day now when you look at a technology you understand that an average child would use it about seven and a half hours daily consuming media with laptops smartphones video games anything so do you spend that much time on the Internet yeah that's so but what can technology do for us other than what it's already doing well.

Using Technology in Classrooms

You realize that technology in school can lift weights off shoulders and it creates an interactive learning experience like no other that can even be better than teaching sometimes by real teachers. Now let's talk about that that learning is carrying a weight off a shoulder, now if you look at this textbook that is a 10 approximately a 10-pound textbook now think if you had the 5 classes every day in a textbook per class that's about 50 pounds but the average boy that weighs 112 pounds should only have about 20% of what he weighs on his back so that's about 22 pounds compared 50 pounds to 22. Eventually, you're going to look like this dude and a lot of you already do hunch over walking around with big backpacks. But if you were to take out the technology in school i.e. your phone you would realize that this phone is only around 3 grams. All you have to do is click on an app your Safari button, anything and go to a provider such as McDougal online textbooks or hope McDougald person online or sometimes McGraw-hill.

They all contain online textbooks at your disposal on your lightweight tiny phone that's the technology in school. Now, what about that learning experience I'm sure some of you have seen this mouse as sure the commercials are on there and say our mouse and I bet you're wondering why it's on there because it's really meant for younger adult your kids like seven-year-olds five-year-olds pre-k students but if you realize this does bring the point up that you can create an interactive learning experience that does help using those five senses to learn. 

So, every time you go to remember these things everything they teach you to use those five senses everything so you will truly remember, and if you look at the algebra nation students at my school dr. John long and I'm not sure if any other schools did this use something called algebra nation. Basically, we got a textbook that we got to keep, we wrote in it, rewrite it, we did everything but there'd be a little man on the screen and wrote on the same exact book. So as we watched the video we would write it so we experienced it as we watched we listened to it and we sold it we saw it all happen.

So we use the three learning skills technology in school audio-visually and actually doing it. So,  we're getting 90% of everything into our brains so every time we remember it we're going to remember all of it.

As some of you might say well Ethan What is my child doing on the Internet? What is he doing on these phones? What is he doing on the technology in classrooms ?

Everything I don't want him to do he can too but look at that dinosaur he may not seem very friendly at first but on the Samsung phones. You will recognize him because he is the kid's mode and things in apps like this like Parenthood controls can control what your children do and create a safeguard for anybody on your technology on smartphones on computers so that way you don't have to worry about anything that's bad or criminal or maxing out your credit card.

So, you go broke now you could be thinking about all the good technology in school does but if you realize the people here this generation kind of built it for us they said you can have it but the generation here they said no you can't use it but the generation here is the generation that builds up all of our superintendents all of our people that create rules and to control our technology in education but they may not understand what it's like for us they use technology because we were born in it because they grew the children here these children the children here with it or the kids of this generation so they taught us better but they taught us differently they taught us the next generation like so together we can create a way for the older generations that do control our school systems to allow us to live like how we should like this generation allowed us to thank you.

Pros & Cons of technology in school

Using Technology in classrooms is increasing nationwide and right here in the four states but is it improving the learning environment or taking away I spoke with the project director at Will's place in Joplin about this topic any time you're talking about child development and growth you're always looking to optimize benefits and you know minimize costs to get those benefits meaning there has to be a balance of Technology and concrete learning.

What they miss by using some computer technology in school as compared to you know not a virtual but an actual concrete physical world if young kids are only introduced to things like iPads or technology. It can hinder brain development for all five senses so the gap between what the benefits could be in the cost is greater when you depend just on computer technology in school after seeing Joplin High School replaced books with computers in the classroom.

A few years ago I decided to speak with some teachers and students to see how this change is going. I really like it because I'm not one of the most organized people and I use a lot of papers so whenever I can keep everything on my laptop it works really well and you get someone many more resources versus just using the textbook or using a teacher's notes and also stuff with like the smart board projection is a part of technology in school it's a more unlimited way to watch videos or stuff to get visualizations while we're learning in class three teachers I spoke with say new programs on the computers like canvas helped keep both students and teachers organized they have so much access that I can say okay let's look at this up and you can find it where is your book restricts you to just what's in this book but it's finding a way to implement it only one needed this is the first school where I have I've had to kind of step up my game with technology in school. I think if we can really focus on managing the technology and the tools that we have effectively and efficiently then I think test scores will increase if it's used wisely I think that we can get more intelligent by having so much access but it comes with a price distraction I think engagement has always an issue it's easier to lose kids in the technology just because it's so easy to click over to another tab to check your email or to get on Facebook another negative to technology is the craft of writing is being lost didn't don't know how to read and write cursive anymore their penmanship is not something that we focus on sometimes if I give instructions or I'll write on the board and cursive writing a lot of my students can't read that what we need to do to teach them how to use the internet and all the technology in school that's out there before they're gonna be proficient at.
